View Full Version : New WRX
Aside from the visual debate on whether or not the car looks appealing, lets talk about power delivery.
I have read that the 2.5 is the same motor, but fitted with a new turbocharger. I feel that it is safe to assume that this is part of the reason why the torque now comes in at 2800rpm.
Now, I'm not that experienced on the Subaru technical side, but could it be possible that the "linear" power reviews it has been given could be sorted out with an ECU upgrade or some other mod?
The whole reason I'm looking into the WRX now, regardless of what it looks like, is the fun of driving a turbocharged car. The feeling of a honda civic until the turbo kicks in, and all of a sudden it turns into a Mustang GT. That "rush", if you will, you get when you stomp on the gas.
I guess I'm just trying to make up my mind on whether or not to chase after a new model or to possibly seek an older one, or even a different make.
Yeah, STi is tempting, but they'd have to offer it with a spoiler delete option. When my wife and I take trips, she always wants me to drive which normally means taking my car. A die hard Ford fan doesn't like big "ricer" spoilers, as she calls it.
I'm just wondering how well you all feel the new WRX will be accepted into the import community and if that "rush" of power feeling could be easily restored to the car.
Upgrading suspension, brakes, and wheels? No problem. I don't mind doing that, but I'd like to keep the engine modifications as minimal as possible, yet have that nice sporty feeling to the drive.
Have a driven an 04-07 WRX? Nope, so I have nothing to compare it to. Just curious as to what you all think about the new model!

Cobb Stage 2 involves an exhaust and ECU upgrade. That is the most significant power upgrade you can perform without removing the turbo...and in the past it has given adequate power gains. Removing unsprung weight through lightweight rotors/wheels/tires can also help. More recently, carbon fiber driveshafts have become a rage with regard to the STI and I am sure that will trickle down to the WRX.
Before I owned my Subaru STI, I had previously owned two Mustangs. A 1993 Mustang Cobra and a 1995 GT. While I was not totally enamored with the GT, I refused to buy another car until I could get the same torque. If you are a torque junkie, then chances are you will love AWD with turbo. I know I did. Once you make that decision, then you must decide between a used WRX, used STI, or a new WRX unless your budget could put you in the new STI when it comes out. :)
I got my eye on the hatch probably...I like it more and more every day...
But you can't go wrong buying a used 06/07 STI imo
I like it better than the wagon.

You cant go wrong with an AWD car--Its just awesome. A turbo on our boxer motors is all the more better. You wont be dissapointed if you purchase a Subaru. A great used one or a brand new one. (Not that I have experience with the new ones, or am a fan of their looks), but its a Subaru...Keep us posted on your findings!
If the only thing holding you back from the STi is the possibility of it coming with a wing... do a hatch swap with a WRX like we all do now with trunk swaps. It's the same stuff, just a hatch instead of a trunk.
As for the power, the new WRX is tight. However, it kind of bothers me that it comes with an open differential... but that's why you get the STi instead. It's a sick platform, I would look into getting one. I am actually going on a test drive tomorrow, I'll post a review asap!

Please Do!!!
So, would I be 100% correct in thinking that even with the "flawed" reviews of the new WRX suspension compared to the older ones, that sucker would still hand my mustang its a** on a track, especially an Auto-X course.
i just heavily disfavor the appearance. as far as performance, Ill have to test it out myself before I judge it.

any subaru would hand your mustang its ass on a track/auto x... however the new ones got handles... it doesnt have lsd, but its got traction control that does the same thing faster than lsd. the new car tucks and has little to no recoil coming out of turns. it will bring shame upon your mustang ;)
From what i heard the sti will have about 25 more HP and a diffrent motor

Since I read the review and saw the pictures just posted in tis forum, I'm really liking the new front ends.
Not sure on wether or not the '08 is for me, but my wife may go for it more easily.
I don't like how crowded things have became, but it does look nice.
Sports Grille FTW

Only 25?
We better get a 330+ hp STI hatch...
Oh man, I want I want :D
I went to the dealer today. I was one of the first people to fully check out the 08 sedan and wagon they had on their lot. I hate the look of the wagon and give it a 5 out of 10 and I give the sedan a 7 out of 10... The sedan will definately grow on me. I really liked how much lower it sat. Don't like the intigrated hood scoop. fender flairs are subtle but there. like the different fin look, don't like the smaller trunk. I have come to the conclusion that the sedan with some kick ass rims can make it look pretty mean! It will grow on me. the wagon just won't cut it.
I don't like the smaller intercooler, really like the interrior: better radio/sound system, like the new sti style tach in the middle, very comfortable and smoother ride. the back of the car looks subaru, the front of the car looks mazda/toyota/subaru into one. there is a ton of room between the intercooler and where the actual scoop is on the hood. probably 6 inches of distance from the back of the scoop to the intercooler, but it works for keeping engine cool aswell. it was priced for 28k which is high for right now, but it will go down a bit hopefully.
the dealer also said the STi will not be released for another 6 months or so, and we won't see a 2008 sti at all. It won't become available to the public untill at least a year from now. BUMMER!
this also means that we will have a whole year of no new STis which will put those in higher demand. he wasn't clear of subaru not making the sti for a year or if they will continue with the same body style untill the 09 STi. it would be smart for them to continue.
over all, I was pleased with the sedan, and not pleased with the wagon. I might actually look into a sedan after I see them on the road. I need to see a modified one first.
I swung by the Subaru dealer in my area and I'd have to agree. The new WRX's are awesome in sedan form...AS LONG AS THE SPORTS GRILLE OPTION IS ON IT! :)
The hatch's, well, they are not, and will never, grow on me. I'm not a big hatch fan. If I decided to go with a hatch, I'd go with a GTI or something like that. MS3 wouldn't be a bad choice either.
I did notice that my local dealer had about 3 or 4 '07 STi's on the lot still. Hmmm.....
yea I noticed that the dealer only had 3 STi's left on their lot and only one 07 WRX was left... can you all say HIGH DEMAND.
ya i cant find any 08 yet
